The best

The best thing about Ryokan Chic Hostel is that they understand the need of staying connected on the road. The Wi-Fi works everywhere in the property, and it is the strongest near the bean bag chairs (I thought this was very appropriate). There are plugs on the wall everywhere, as well as lights and fans. The dorm beds have individual reading lights (pretty bright!) and plugs, and also a little shelf for personal belongings. They made me comfortable and convenient during the stay.

The hostel is well designed and stylish which is a pretty cool feat considering that they’ve put it inside a historic building. The window-less rooms help keep the air-con working efficiently. A breakfast of eggs, toast and jam, and fruit is provided in the morning. Also the staff is really great about pointing out all the great eating places around town. Also, the hostel is in an excellent, central location.

The worst

Because the building is old and historic, the wooden floor makes a lot of noise when people walk. And not everyone’s careful when taking footsteps. It is just a small side effect of running your business in an awesome old building.

There’s an in-room security locker. You’ll need your own lock. The door to the rooms operates with an electronic key, and there was always someone at the front desk.

The front desk staff was very helpful with information. The hostel is located at the heart of the old town, near many sights. There are plenty of eateries around the hostel (in fact, there are eateries everywhere in Penang), and it is a good neighborhood to walk around at night. Ryokan Chic Hostel has been a great temporary home and office for three days.
