Hostel
Khaosan Beppu Spa Hostel is located in Beppu, on the northeast coast of Japan’s Kyushu Island. Beppu is known as Japan’s hot springs capital.
First off, Khaosan Beppu has it’s own onsen! Onsen is the Japanese term for hot springs, or hot mineral bath. How many hostel can claim that?
Besides the pleasure of soaking your bones in the onsen each night before bed, the assets of Khaosan Beppu are numerous. What I love about this hostel is the staff. They are friendly and great about giving information for visiting the sites and recommending good places to eat around town. They were really patient with me–and I’ve always got lots of travel and sightseeing questions.
Khaosan Beppu is equipped with a common area to hang out, a kitchen, computers, free WiFi. There is also a bar in their annex building. This hostel is a great place to meet fellow travelers. They also offer free bicycles to guests.
Beds at Khaosan Beppu are a great value, the least expensive I encountered in Japan.
The facilities at Khaosan Beppu are slightly ageing, but not enough to say it even detracts from the experience of staying there.
For me, the downtown location was good, because it was less-touristic and in proximity to good eating options. But if you’re going to be spending the majority of time in Myouban or Kannawa resort areas, you’ll need to spend extra money on taking the bus over to those areas.
The Wi-Fi connection is strong and there are multiple routers throughout the hostel.

I absolutely recommend Khaosan Beppu for a friendly, inexpensive accommodation option in Beppu. I had a blast while visiting Beppu and was very glad I based myself for four nights at Khaosan Beppu while visiting the nearby onsen and enjoying the various local culinary specialties.
